CATHERINE WALKER

Catherine Walker was born in France in 1945.  Following a Master's degree in Philosophy from the Universities of Lille and Aix-en-Provence, she visited London, but stayed longer than

she expected after meeting and marrying a young English solicitor John Walker.  Following a tragic accident in 1975 she was widowed with two baby girls.

She began her commercial life the following year in 1976 selling clothes from a basket walking up and down the Kings Road in Chelsea, while studying at night to become a designer. At

the British Fashion Awards in 1990 she was awarded Designer of the Year for Couture and again in 1991 Designer of the Year for Glamour.

Catherine Walker always remained an anomaly in the fashion world – nor formal training, shunning the limelight and never showing her collections on the runway.

In September 2010 after bravely fighting cancer twice Catherine Walker passed away near her family home in Sussex.

CATHERINE WALKER & CO

In 2008, and in failing health, Catherine Walker handpicked and trained a new design team under the name Catherine Walker & Co with a portfolio of designs to spring/summer 2012. Through her foresight, this new team is equipped to carry forward her philosophy and the unique handwriting of her brand into the 21st century.

She is noted for having created well over 1,000 dresses and outfits for Diana Princess of Wales.

When Diana was buried, she was wearing a black dress designed by Walker.

Walker and Princess Diana’s professional relationship began in 1981 after her marriage to Charles, and lasted until her death sixteen years later.
